Why Virtualize Voice Applications?

Chief Information Officers and other IT managers have to deal with two worlds – not because they want to, but because they have to.

First, there is the world of the datacenter. Its servers and other hardware components, and the business applications that run on them, are the backbone of the organization. They turn the data that companies generate and collect the information they need to understand and operate the business.

Then, there is the world of telephony. Here, the voice application ensures that the people whose performance determines how well the organization does, how effectively it competes, and whether it succeeds or fails, communicate with one another to ensure that information is understood and acted on. Even in today’s high-tech world, voice communication is the beating heart of the business.

Before we dive into reasons why these two worlds have come together let’s take a look at some history. Voice applications in the past have been very I/O intensive and required dedicated hardware. As a result, many vendors sold their own hardware and controlled what customers did with these environments.

Managing those worlds was not easy. It meant having two of everything. Two budgets with two groups of personnel with different sets of specialized skills. It also meant two technology infrastructures to buy, deploy, and support. It had to be that way though, because data applications and voice applications have very different needs when it comes to the hardware they run on and the ways in which they can be managed.

At least, they did until now.

The worlds of data and voice have evolved and many voice applications today should be virtualized.  A number of CIOs consider their voice applications to be a mission critical application and as a result there are many reasons why voice applications should run on a virtual Infrastructure.  If you'd like to learn more about the specific products and solutions that we can offer, conact U.S. Voice & Data today!
